I love France. I love Paris. I love their amazing food.

I love Amelie, Parisian traffic jams, macaroons, Run Lola Run, Zinedine Zidane, Montmartre, the stunning architecture, Yann Tiersen, DJ Zebra, and the French national strikes. And the wine. Oh, do the French know about wine! Bordeaux! Burgundy! Côtes du Rhone! Loire Valley! Have you seen A Good Year?

So it’s with great delight that I see another French company bringing their wine choice, subscription and delivery service to our humble shores. Welcome, Le Petit Ballon!

Le Petit Ballon

Le Petit Ballon started in 2009 when Martin Ohannessian, already an entrepreneur in the music industry, decided to change course and jump into the world of monthly wine subscriptions. . Their Head sommelier is Jean-Michel Deluc, former Sommelier Chef at The Ritz. He knows his stuff. And now he’s picking out some premium choices for the likes of us in the UK!

Le Petit BallonThere are two subscription types available – Grape Expectations (unknown vineyards and great value wines, £24.90 per month) and Age of Raisin (prestigious labels for connoisseurs, £39.90 per month).

Le Petit Ballon also have their online shop so if you discover a wine you love, or fancy the look of something, you can pick up some more of the good stuff!

It’s not expensive either. They have sales, low priced wines, but also a large selection of the more exclusive vino.

I received the Le Petit Ballon welcome pack which consisted of Fleur de Chardonnay (a popular choice) and the Château Le Chêne, a fruity red blend from Bordeaux.

You get information about your wine in both the pack and on the Le Petit Ballon website. In fact, you get loads of info about the history of the wine, the flavour & tasting notes and also suggested pairings.

Le Petit Ballon

The wine itself is, naturally, delicious. One of the things I liked about the website is that if you like a particular wine then they’ll highlight other wines that people liked like that one!

They also have a brilliant Youtube channel where they discuss the wines they send out. (You could learn from this and then reel it off to your friends and family like you’re a wine expert!)

If you know someone who likes their wine and wants to learn more, this would be a great Christmas present. There are a few wine subscription boxes on the market now, all slightly different. This isn’t the cheapest, so it’s just a matter of comparing them and figuring out which one offers the angle that suits you best.
