When you become interested in cooking, it’s only a matter of time until you try and make your creations more authentic.
This could be seeking out better quality spices or growing your own herbs. It could also be looking for authentic equipment to develop your cooking techniques like a wok, pasta roller or a pizza stone.
If you’re looking to expand your cooking skills, pizzas are a great place to start. They are simple to make, easily adapted to suit people’s tastes and damn tasty! The Pizza stone (or baking stone) developed to become a great way to make crispy and light pizzas and bread.
The downside of pizza stones is that they are prone to breakages. Putting a hot stone under cold water will often crack it, and dropping one can easily result in a break.
Luckily, there’s an alternative in a Pizza Steel. The principal is exactly the same. Instead of the breakable stone, however, you’re dealing with a specialised, durable piece of steel.
Here’s how I got on with unboxing and preparing the Pizza Steel:
(Note – there are actually two Combi Peels in the video. I didn’t separate them properly. Doh!)
We then made some pizza bases from scratch, and also made the pizza topping ourselves.
With the pizza dough, I’d taken shortcuts in the past. This time, I decided to do the kneading for the full ten minutes.
The kids helped with making their own pizzas.
Hold on. I used the word ‘authentic’ but there’s cheddar all over the topping? Well, I also said a great thing about pizza is that they’re easily adaptable to suit people’s tastes, and I *love* the taste of melted cheddar. Lasagna, macaroni cheese, burritos, enchiladas. Drool.
The Pizza Steel had been in for over an hour, and the oven was on a very hot setting, so we whacked in the pizzas for 10 – 12 minutes. The results were brilliant!
It’s simply the best tasting pizza that I’ve ever made. There are a distinct lack of photos because every was too busy chowing down on their dinners. I guess you can’t get a better compliment on cooking than that!
On it’s own, the Pizza Steel is £58, but there is an offer on just now where you can get the Steel, TWO Combi Peels (prep shelves) and the dough cutter for just £67.80!
Clearly, I’m delighted with the Pizza Steel, and I’ll be using it for more pizzas, bread and rolls. Crunchy!
