I’m a big fan of recipe kits and big flavours. The Spicery combine those to great effect.
It’s a crime to serve bland food. If you’re going to spend time crafting a meal then make it taste of something. Something big! There’s no better way to do that than with lashings of spices, herbs and mixing them together in awe inspiring ways.
The Spicery offer a range of spice combos in meal kits which cover a wide variety of cooking styles and cuisines. I’ve been sent a box of spices from the Food Truck range.
From the hottest American food trucks to the smallest Malaysian carts. They’ve taken inspiration from cutting-edge vendors from food truck capitals such as Malaysia, USA and Korea to create thrilling new fusion food that you can make yourself.
Specifically, this box is for Malaysian Fried Chicken with Honey Soy Sauce. From the blurb:
We’ve given the Spicery treatment to a classic from deep south U.S.A! The chicken is coated in flour seasoned with Malaysian flavours including kaffir lime, turmeric , lemongrass and galangal and perched on top of an American style pancake containing creamed corn and sesame seeds – drizzle this with as much chilli sauce and sweet honey soy (in place of maple syrup) as you like.
In the box, I get (deep breath): Chicken marinade, corn salsa spices, flour spices, chili sauce spices, honey soy spices, potato seasoning, za’atar and sesame seeds. There are also whole chilies and a very detailed recipe guide.
The Spicery also send out a detailed shopping list of things required to make the meal and a step-by-step guide on how to put it all together.
The spices are clearly labelled, individually wrapped and look great. The chicken and the chips are both baked at the same temperature, so you can see they’ve planned this well. In fact, the guide is very simple to follow and takes you through from opening the packets to serving the food on the plate. It’s very straightforward.
This food is clearly for an event. You’re not going to throw this together for a quick meal, at least not the first time that you make it. I’m making this meal for four and inviting the in-laws around to try it out. Follow my instagram to see how it works out! It should look like this….
My wife doesn’t eat chicken, so I’ll be substituting aubergine for the chicken for ¼ of the dish. Or white fish. Not a problem. That’s something that this pack offers you – flexibility. You can swap ingredients around to suit your tastes plus, because it’s just the spices and not the food itself, you don’t have to eat it all in the same week that you get it.
The box costs £22 and can be bought as a gift or as a treat for yourself!

I love a hot, spicy curry
A colleague recently gave me a box she’d received which was along similar lines, but contained various sauces. To be honest, I already cook a lot and found what she gave me a bit of a faff. It seemed strange to have a different sauce on each element of a meal. However, what you’ve reviewed here looks far more inspirational. The recipe is exciting and not something you’d find in any old repertoire. I am intrigued!
