Shout! Review

We aspire to make Friday night a games night, at least once a month. No laptops, phones or tv allowed. Everyone plays the game without distraction, just like we did when we were kids!

shoutpic(Honestly, few things annoy me as much as kids texting during dinner. What is so important that it can’t wait until you’ve chewed your food? Did one of you lose the nuclear codes? No? Eat your dinner.)

So, Fridays. The girls (aged 3, 4) are in bed so it’s the older kids (aged 12, 17) who play. One particular game, Shout! (rrp £29.99, age 12+) caught my eye a while back so I was delighted to get a copy to review from Drumond Park Games.

There’s nothing quite like this game. The board is a unique sculpture which clicks together easily. The base is the scoring system, while a rotating horizontal frame holds the timer and the game cards.

The game itself requires two teams. The guessing team is presented with a card. The asking team asks the question written on the back of the card, then the guessers have one minute to answer the question. See below for an example card. There are also wordsearch cards, matching answers with pic challenges and enough to keep your brain ticking over.

You get a point for every right answer. There’s the option to throw a Double-or-Nothing card at your opponents, which raises the stakes, but we played without it for our first game.

The game is quite quick-fire and moves along at a decent pace. There are a large amount of cards (100) so it will keep you going for a long time. It gets the old brain working well too – lots of lateral thinking required. Best of all, it is tremendous fun!

We’ve also played it with a bigger group, with two teams of four. It was a raucous event, with everyone passionately getting into it!

I can see us playing this game again often and would definitely recommend it. I think the 12+ rating is spot on. The questions might go over some younger heads.

In short, this is one of the most original, funny, satisfying board games that I have played in years!
