The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve : Review

The GlenrothesThe Glenrothes Vintage Reserve

The combination of different Vintages aged in a variety of casks creates a balance of mature experience and vibrant youth. The oldest constituent brings mellow oak and dried fruits; the greatest proportion adds soft, mature, sweet vanilla; the more youthful add exuberance and lemon citrus, creating a sharp and uplifting taste.

Appearance:
Brassy gold.

Bouquet:
Unusually fragrant, soft in style, wafts of mature citrus and honeycomb accompanied with characteristic red fruits.

Palate:
Very soft silky/creamy mouth-feel. Red berry fruits swirl and dominate with time over the nebulous nuttiness.

Finish:
Mid to long citrus and honeyed vanilla and the faint reminder of 1st fill sherry casks.

ABV 40% vol. 70cl

Review

This is dangerously easy to drink. It’s beautiful, smooth and without any element of harshness.

Nose
Vanilla, caramel, a light sweetness and a subtle clean lemon smell.

The Glenrothes

Palate
A tremendous hazelnuttiness (which is a word. I checked). A rounded, creamy mouth with berries and more hazelnuts. Some oak and a little heat.

The Glenrothes

Finish
Long, honeyed, initially dry then rounded sweetness, marvellous.

The Glenrothes

Overall

Vintage Reserve comprises 10 different Vintages from the last three decades: 1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

The effect is a wonderfully golden, honeyed, nutty complex and delicious whisky. Tiny hints of spice and heat are some of the additional layers hidden within. There’s something for everyone here. It’s quite special.

Disclaimer : I was sent a sample from The Glenrothes for the purposes of this review.
