What is BorrowMyDoggy?

During the Easter break, we were taking regular walks on the East Fife beaches.

My youngest, Eve, developed a love of dogs from all those she met on those coastal walks. She talks about the dogs she met, like Dexter the mongrel, Sandy the red setter and the little spaniel she met outside the shop (below).

Buying a dog ourselves isn’t an option at the moment. Our back garden is too small, and there’s nobody in the house most days. Plus, most importantly, our old cat isn’t doing so well. She was diagnosed as diabetic a couple of months back, and also has a worsening kidney issue. The last thing she could handle right now is a dog moving in.

But we didn’t want Eve to miss out. She literally yells DOG every time she sees one. She was smitten.

We then discovered BorrowMyDoggy. It’s a website where dog owners, and those who wish to walk a dog, can register and get in touch.

The amount of dogs local to us surprised me. The site details the dogs who live close by to you, and there were loads. The dogs are classed by size, by when they’re available, and by how good they are with children and other dogs.

We arranged to meet a little dog that lived less than half a mile from us.

Lola is a five year old Bichon Frise. She’s a small dog who is mostly teddy bear. Her temperament is equally teddy bear in that she doesn’t object to any attention. We arranged to meet up.

We met Lola at a local park where her owner, Trish, brought her on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Eve was transfixed. Lola was easy going and loved the attention. Trish told us all about Lola’s history, and had loads of stories about the Bichon Frise breed. She was clearly very knowledgeable.

We took Lola on a walk, with Eve holding her lead. We didn’t need to be worried about Lola pulling Eve because she was far too small, and scampered along without any problems.

Once let off the lead, Lola tore around a huge field until she tired herself out. At that point, she lay on the grass and got her belly tickled.

The Bichon Frise breed doesn’t shed hair. For my wife, who has never had a dog, this was a big deal. Part of the reason a dog seemed like a bad idea was that the previous owner of our property had a big hairy dog, and he never cleaned up after it. It took a long time to get the smell of dog and residual dog hairs out of our house. So, the idea that this little quite breed wouldn’t have that problem was something to note.

We’ve since met up with Lola again, and she’s coming to visit our back yard to chill out at the weekend. Needless to say, the girls are very excited. (We haven’t told Sooty about it yet.)

BorrowMyDoggy.com hasn’t cost us a single penny. We did contact some owners who simply didn’t reply to our messages but our experiences of the site has been overwhelmingly positive.
